Consumers in for a very rough ride with petrol hike busrep

DURBAN - With the expected petrol price increase of 56 cents a litre just days away, debt-stressed consumers are going to have to cut unnecessary expenses to the bone if they hope to get through the month without running out of cash while diesel is expected to remain flat.

He added, "If the rand continues to slide against the US Dollar and a shortage of crude drives up prices the result could be too horrible to contemplate". Roets said that it was also painfully evident from the rapid growth of Debt Rescue that a growing number of consumers were falling behind in debt repayments and resorting to the process of legal debt review.

The outcome of the election could have a major impact on the fuel price as it could affect the exchange rate. Roets said that with gross consumer debt at around R1.73 trillion and the government’s gross loan debt at R2.2 trillion in 2016/17 financial year, it is clear that South Africans are in for a very rough ride/
