Higher education has seen growth in the democratic era but still needs improvement, says Maluleke.

Speaking at a two-day conference at the University of Johannesburg themed “30 Days of Democracy in South Africa: Towards Social and Global Transformation”, Maluleke noted that the education sector has more than doubled in size, increased in diversity, and added new institutions.

Maluleke emphasised the importance of fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students, “No graduate should leave the university without doing the entrepreneurial walk. They must walk like entrepreneurs, they must think like entrepreneurs even if they have a degree in teaching or in some other field.”

“Gone are the days when a graduate goes back to their village and starts looking for adverts for teaching jobs when in fact their village does not even have an early learning centre which they could initiate.” Maluleke also highlighted the need for universities to ensure that graduates are proficient in the language of Artificial Intelligence and are well-versed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
