According to residents, Waterval township has been experiencing water disruptions for almost two decades.Residents say some politicians are illegally drawing water to their businesses, thus disrupting supply to communities.
One of the people suspected of illegal connections is an African National Congress councillor in the Makhado municipality. They say they had meetings with Vhembe district municipal authorities requesting their intervention, but no action has been taken. Concerned resident, Bernard Maluleke says, “The municipality pipes and the distribution pipes have been tampered with; that’s where we realised that we have a serious problem. Most of the illegal connections are behind the police station, that is where most of the illegal connections are found. …Some of the people have tampered with, they are senior members in the organisation, the ANC that is governing. We raised this issue with then executive mayor but nothing has been done up until now.
Vhembe District Municipality Spokesperson Matodzi Ralushai declined to comment on record but confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
