Green groups fear that millions of pounds due to be collected in fines won't be used to clean up the environment
Ofwat is required by law to send any money it receives via water companies penalties to the Treasury.Green groups argue that this money should be ringfenced to spend on projects that would tackle sewage spills and improve river quality. “Our rivers deserve sustained investment to right the wrongs caused by sewage, abstraction and pollution from a host of other sectors too,” said Ali Morse, water policy manager at the Wildlife Trusts.
The upcoming Budget is likely to prioritise Labour’s “five missions” – economic growth, green energy, crime, education and the NHS – meaning environmental spending may miss out.
