General Motors is investing $170 million into its Oshawa, Ont. plant, saving 300 of the 2,600 jobs that are slated to be lost when the facility halts vehicles production by the end of 2019.

Hundreds of jobs have been saved at an Oshawa, Ont. General Motors plant as the company invests $170 million to transform the facility.

Unifor national president Jerry Dias said one of the key aspects of the announcement is “the first ever” aftermarket facility for GM. GM is also planning to transform part of the property at the Oshawa plant into a test track for autonomous vehicles and advanced technology vehicles. “This announcement, though it might not have a lot of jobs as we sit here today in May, there’s going to be a heck of a lot more in December. There will be more next year. There will be more the year after as we continue to attract work.”

Hester says 50 per cent of GM employees and Unifor members will likely take retirement packages. Details of what the retirement package will include are expected to be released on Thursday. General Motors is also expected to reveal how many potential transfer jobs will be available to employees at the Oshawa plant.

Todd Smith, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, called the announcement “good news for the City of Oshawa and all of Durham.”

I am not a big union supporter (skilled trades maybe, but not public sector nor unskilled labor). Not a Dias fan. But I give him credit for extracting these few crumbs from GM.
