Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has defended the R800 000 spent on his trip to the Paris Olympics.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie at the handover of instruments and refurbishments to Mitchells Plain music academy in Cape Town on October 15, 2024.McKenzie says his job is to go to sporting events and his attendance cannot be compared to Superfan, Mama Joy.

He says, “You know I was in the news for spending money, going to Paris. The past two days, I had to answer being called a ‘joy ride’… I first got very angry because they were comparing to, ‘they said I removed Mama Joy and I replaced myself with her. I got angry, then I realised being a government official, you must be transparent. You’ve taken on something that you can’t be angry when people ask you about their money because every cent that you are using is belonging to the people.

“So I had six meetings I had to attend, now before the opening ceremony, the rugby started for those who do not know, so I went to go watch the Sevens Rugby. Then when the Olympics started, I sat in the ring so that our athletes can have someone screaming for them there,” he adds.
