Chief Justice Maya on an oversight visit to the Supreme Court of Appeal , where she was welcomed by the President of the SCA, Justice Molemela .She delivered the keynote address at the South African National Editors’ Forum Gala dinner on Saturday.
Justice Molemela cited disinformation and misinformation as major threats to South Africa’s hard earned democracy. “Journalists and other institutions, including the judiciary, face hacking, cyber attacks and harassment online which constitute an existential threat to our democracy. The reality is that despite constitutional safeguards, the media and the judiciary still face challenges emanating from the widespread use of digital platforms as many individuals feel entitled to take advantage of anonymity by saying anything they wish , fact and fabrication alike, from behind a screen.
