The children died on Tuesday morning, after allegedly consuming contaminated food.

Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating the cause behind the death of two children aged two and six in Cabhane village in uMzumbe on the south coast.Three other family members have also been hospitalised after consuming the same food, and the family’s pet dog also died after eating leftovers.“I am told they had rice and beans on Sunday. By Monday morning, they had all lost their appetites. They drank water but later started vomiting and complained of stomach cramps.

“We have intervened to make sure that tests are conducted and they are prioritising what happened here. Samples have been taken and will be sent to Pretoria by SAPS to make sure they are analyzed and that we are given facts. We cannot really speculate because the mother herself is here with the family but she was also sick,” says Shinga.

The Department’s Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says the matter of one learner who was discovered to be pregnant is being handled by relevant stakeholders.
