SACP to review its relationship with ANC

The South African Communist Party has vowed to use its 5th Special National Conference to review its relationship with the African National Congress and assert its independence in the alliance.

This follows concerns that its partnership with the ANC has undermined its independence and diluted its political influence. The party will convene its four-day meeting from the 11th to the 14th of next month in Boksburg east of Johannesburg.the ANC’s declining electoral performanceSpeaking to the SABC, SACP spokesperson and Central Committee member Dr Alex Mashilo says they want to redefine their role and regain their independence.

“SACP will be focusing more at this special conference on asserting its independence. The fact that we are in an alliance with the ANC, Cosatu and SANCO should not subvert our independence. There is a concern from within the SACP grassroots and different layers of leadership that the manner in which the alliance is structured has the unintended consequence of subverting the independence of the SACP.
