Since 2006, the UN has received more than 700 paternity claims in relation to its peace operations.

The UN launched the dashboard yesterday as part of its efforts to resolve outstanding paternity and child support claims in relation to the operations.

Since 2006, the world body has received more than 700 paternity claims in relation to its peace operations, 85% of which concern military peacekeepers with most of them being unresolved. According to the dashboard, 80 claims of paternity are pending resolution for various reasons while at least 31 either saw paternity unestablished or where a claim was withdrawn by the mother or guardian of the child.

The UN says member states contributing personnel to its peace operations are required to facilitate the resolution of paternity and child support claims involving their uniformed military or police personnel who were alleged to have fathered children while deployed to such operations. In a short statement, the South African Mission to the UN indicated that the government was fully committed to a zero-tolerance approach to sexual exploitation and abuse, and was proactively working with the international organisation to address the behavior of its peacekeepers and to facilitate paternity and maintenance claims.Follow the Sun I Walking with the lions at Ukutula Game Reserve
