Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico over border security concerns has sent shockwaves through the Canadian business community. Small and mid-sized manufacturers are particularly vulnerable as they are tightly integrated with the U.S. market. Superior Glove Works Ltd., a company based in Acton, Ont., has been building its first American manufacturing facility in North Carolina as a precaution against potential tariffs from the U.S.
The company's owner, Tony Geng, expressed concerns about the similarities between the current situation and the renegotiation of the North American free-trade agreement during Trump's first term. Acton, Ont.-based Superior Glove has three production facilities in Canada that employ about 450 people, with 70 percent of its products destined for the U.S. market
