The climate crisis is worsening, with African countries losing between 2% to 5% of their GDP and up to 9% of their budgets to climate extremes. By 2030, it is estimated that 118 million extremely poor people in Africa will be exposed to drought, floods, and extreme heat.
President Ramaphosa highlighted the increasing rate of climate-induced natural disasters and the need for global financial support for post-disaster reconstruction. Under South Africa’s presidency of the G20, efforts will be made to mobilize finance for a just energy transition, aiming to secure agreement on increasing climate finance flows to developing countries
