Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announces that the government will not support state-owned enterprises (SOEs) with bailouts, despite the positive financial performance of South African Airways (SAA). The announcement came as the National Assembly passed the medium-term budget policy statement.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has stated that bailouts to state-owned enterprises will not be a hallmark of the seventh administration. The National Assembly recently passed the medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) tabled by Godongwana in October, despite objections from four parties.

Special appropriations have been made to cover the South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL)’s debt, government’s case against Israel, disaster relief, and military deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the promising financial performance of South African Airways (SAA) with a net profit of R252 million in the 2022/23 financial year, Godongwana emphasized that the government won’t support other SOEs with these funds. He also highlighted the importance of bolstering the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to increase revenue collection
