Some MPs have pushed the Government to take a harder line on China, but the Prime Minister insisted he was already balancing the risks and opportunities of engagement with the country. “But we must also challenge, and we do on important issues like human rights, with frank discussions as I have had on a number of occasions, and of course compete when it comes to trade. But it is better to engage whilst making sure we are clear about the threats and challenges that China poses.”

The Government will set out formal details of the new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme within weeks, which will force anyone working at the direction of a foreign government in the UK to register. It is not yet clear whether China will be one of the countries in the “enhanced tier” which expands the range of individuals required to register.
