High fuel costs and poor road conditions have disrupted the transportation of onions from the northern part of Nigeria, leading to a shortage and a significant price increase in the market.

A news agency survey revealed that onions, a key condiment used to spice food, have become increasingly difficult to find and afford in Nigeria. Onion sellers reported a sharp increase in price, from N258,000 to N370,000 per bag in December. Obigaeli Nwokoye, a petty trader dealing in onions, explained that bad roads and transportation delays caused by high fuel costs hindered the supply of onions.

She said that a few weeks ago, there were no onions available in the entire market due to these issues. Another seller, Chioma Okeke, echoed the concern over the price hikes and urged the government to address the issue by giving special attention to food transporters to ensure a steady supply of food items
