An ominous merger of the nation’s two largest newspaper chains was buried in the business pages this week. This significant and troubling story described the merger of Gannett GateHouse Media, a combination likely to hasten the demise of local news coverage throughout the United States.

, “The disintegration of community journalism leads to greater polarization, lower voter turnout, more pollution, less government accountability and less trust.”

Though some argue that it is too late to reverse these trends, there is too much at stake not to pursue reasonable alternatives to our current path. One option, which I proposed infor journalism, in which substantial new resources would be invested into the system to save local papers and ensure their sustainable future.

Alternatively, one could envision a dramatically different business model for the major tech platforms in relation to newspapers. In an era where online advertising is dominant, Google, Facebook, and Twitter are the beneficiaries of the vast percentage of revenues from digital ads. Their platforms transmit lots of news, including news produced by the mainstream media.
