'My life is hell': Inside Subway's shrinking Australian business | carawaters

"I have only had one or two inquiries. They can see so many stores for sale they know there is something happening with Subway," she said. "I can’t lie to them."

The franchisees complained they were pressured into buying Grinders coffee machines through Coca-Cola at a cash investment of about $5000 each which had now been "almost junked" by most Subways. Franchisees must pay $49.90 per month per store for the program alongside 1.5 per cent of total sales for the program, which franchisees say will cost most stores around $10,000 a year.Credit:The system replaces existing loyalty cards and franchisees say they have been approached by Subway staff and told if they do not join the program they will be marked out of compliance and pushed out of business.

He said he found buyers for the two stores at $1.5 million for each store but Subway head office blocked the sale. "Subway makes no apology for innovating to increase the profitability of franchise owners and adapting to the changing needs of Australians," the spokesperson said.

carawaters Remember Delifrance? (Gourmet sandwiches & French bakery). It was fabulous but all the franchises closed down in Sydney in the early-mid 2000s. On a another note, my local Bakers Delight has shut shop. It was opposite Woolies and I think it couldn’t compete with woolies bakery.

carawaters Sub... sink

carawaters Right so the only person they can find to publicly support the changes is someone selling the store. Riiiiiggghhhtt.

carawaters Sad state of affairs

carawaters Maybe if the staff actually took ANY care with their food prep, if their toasters werent constantly broken which would allow consistency between outlets it would be a good start....

carawaters If Subway were not so Scungy with their Meat servings , people would keep coming back . The Fact of the matter is People just eventually get Fed - Up with a Bun loaded with Rabbit Food .

carawaters Their recent menu changes are horrible and the new loyalty program is worse than before.

carawaters Roule_FOOD

carawaters Horrible bread, boring fillings easy to walk past. I would have a Vietnamese roll anytime in preference.

carawaters As a franchisee, not only do you work your backside off for somebody else, you take on all the risks too. Another wealth transfer mechanism.

carawaters For a country with a tiny pop of 25 million and 3/4 of that living on the coast between Brisbane & Melbourne..we have a massive oversupply of Franchise brands , that's why so many from so many different brands have closed down .A massive correction is currently under way !

carawaters “The company channels its Australian income through Subway International Holdings BV, a company registered in the Netherlands.” Tax evaders.

carawaters A shame, I feel for the battling franchisees and some of the quotes in the article are gut wrenching. I personally love SUBWAY, and naively I’m somewhat surprised by the struggle reported here.

Some franchisees are visibly showing the stress of the situation. 🤔

carawaters Subway blew up way too fast. It isn’t even nice. Plus they are the reason Quiznos failed in Australia which is more heartbreaking.

carawaters Much to do with it could be the cookies that is side meal and nothing else to offer.

carawaters most franchises r gates to slavery The franchise fee is too costly then rent n wages In China they have a coffee chain without costly Starbuck fee so he is making millions n he opened 100s shops
