Deputy Nationals Leader Bridget McKenzie says the National Party of Australia is committed to restoring confidence in the $1.7 billion live export industry. A bill to appoint an Inspector General to oversee the live animal export industry was passed by parliament this week after the practice made headlines in 2018 for the mistreatment of animals.

Ms McKenzie told Sky News “our government’s really taken tough action on the industry to ensure it’s regulated appropriately”. “What we saw last year was a tragedy, but I think out of that tragedy we as a government, the department of agriculture, and the industry itself, knows it is on notice and is taking proactive steps to give the public confidence that our animals are being treated humanely while being exported,” she said.
