The BCA's new president, Tim Reed, says a cut in the company tax rate is imperative and does not believe the debate is politically toxic in an era of low wage growth.

On the ACCC banking inquiry, Mr Reed signalled concerns that bank-bashing has become a constant theme in the wake of last year's financial services royal commission.

Mr Reed has refused to back suggestions that the Federal Government should shelve its budget surplus ambitions to free up money to stimulate the economy with tax cuts and infrastructure spending. A key supporter of same-sex marriage in the lead-up to the 2017 postal survey, Mr Reed believes business should not be silent on social issues and leaders have a responsibility to speak up.

"I was very active in talking about the same-sex marriage debate because it was important to our business. I wanted people to turn up and know that they were accepted for who they are and I think it is difficult to do that in a place where the laws treat people differently."
