The influential mining lobby group, the Minerals Council of Australia, has backed proposed changes to an industrial relations bill that would see union officials and unions that breach workplace laws accrue penalty points | DarrenGrayRural CroweDM

Business groups have backed proposed changes to a controversial industrial relations bill that would see union officials and unions that breach workplace laws accrue demerit points that could then lead to bans.

"What it does is it provides an incentive to make sure that union officials are behaving well. And that's what any point system is, it's an incentive to act within accordance of the law, or to behave well," said Minerals Council of Australia chief executive Tania Constable."It's not binary, it's not prescriptive on union officials. It sets the appropriate standards and it will ensure that those standards are maintained," she said.

"We're supportive in principle, we haven't seen the detail, but from our perspective so long as the intent of the bill is retained we're very much keen to see it through," she said.
