Today's automobile scene is vastly different from that of 30 years ago: Oldsmobile and Suzuki are just two of the brands that disappeared along the way. phoenix

Taken for granted today, antilocks began an ever-accelerating wave of new technology that continues to amaze. Comparing vehicles with and without antilocks on a slick course sold me. I often thought of buying a classic 1966 Ford Mustang GT like I had in college, but no longer. I want those antilocks, traction control, driver-assistance tech — and cupholders.

Historic American brands Oldsmobile, Mercury, Pontiac as well as foreigners Daewoo, Suzuki and Isuzu bit the dust on my watch. I don’t miss Suzuki Vitara or the odd-looking Pontiac Aztec, but I wish Pontiac Firebird, quirky, lovable Saabs, and the fun little Isuzu Rodeo still were around. Brands still going strong also have had some missteps.
