Once passed into law, Sign Language will be accorded the same status as English, isiZulu and siSwati among others. “The Department of Basic Education has already moved quite far in terms of ensuring the implementations of the provisions of South African sign language. I would have thought that any member of the public accessing government services who is deaf and using sign language will be entitled to communicate with sign language and arrangements would need to be made for somebody to assist in communicating if there is nobody in the house.

The public has 30 days to comment on a proposed amendment of the Constitution to make sign language South Africa’s 12th official language.

Bulshit !

In the townships we're way ahead of them, they should incorporate taxi sign language, to teach people survival techniques in South Africa...

That's a special need for it's own people. There are schools who deal with that, it wouldn't be fair to have the sign language taught to school's whereby the learners don't have those special needs.

DeniseNicholson As the only SA language not associated with any ethnic group, it can have a levelling effect if used between hearing people - not to mention the benefit to deaf people.

Now you're talking my language 🦅

Why is it up for debate? Make it happen

And you have to choose devil sign?

What rubbish, I cannot think of any occasion where I needed sign language during my 60 years on this earth, next I will be expected to learn Innuit because I might run into a native Eskimo somewhere sometime....

It won't work at all. Sign language is very special for specific special people with special needs. RonaldLamola
