The Bay Area’s remote workers are getting plenty of offers to move to a new city across the country — or around the world — even as downtown boosters hope working remotely is just a fad.
That raises concern about the fate of downtown San Francisco and its pricey, if vacant, real estate. Fewer than half of the workers based in San Francisco prior to the pandemic now work in the office on a typical day, among the lowest return rates in the country. That spurredand other incentives to attract and retain businesses downtown.
“The Spanish capital’s multicultural, creative, lively and sustainable environment goes hand-in-hand with its capacity to welcome travelers — making it the ideal destination for digital nomads thinking about their next adventure,” the City of Madrid Tourism Board said in its pitch to remote workers. Others are also seeing opportunities to lure remote workers, if on a more temporary basis. Hyatt Hotels is promoting an offer to members of its frequent guest program — “The Great Relocate Package.”
