A zoning change approved by Austin City Council will allow developers to build taller high-density, mixed-use developments in the area surrounding the city's 'second downtown' to the north.

Zoning regulations that allow for high-density, mixed-use development have grown near The Domain in North Austin, creating the opportunity for developers to expand the area known as the city's second downtown.

Approved in a unanimous vote, the new standard allows for developments in North Austin that could look more like what's found in the Central Business District. The decision builds on a change approved in October, when the building height was increased for the region’s commercial mixed-use, or CMU, gateway zone., who represents District 7. She stated the move represents a step toward a comprehensive change to reflect the area’s transformation into the city's northern downtown.
