Zoox Inc. on Monday said that it successfully tested a robotaxi that has no steering wheel or brake pedal on a public road in Foster City.

Zoox said this is the first time that passengers were transported on a public road in a vehicle designed without human controls. The company said it will continue the driverless shuttle run for its employees while it seeks approval to offer rides to the public. The robotaxi used for the employee shuttle service can transport up to four people at a time, traveling up to 35 mph. The company said its vehicle has shown that it can handle left and right turns, bi-directional turns, traffic lights, cyclists, pedestrians, vehicles and other road occurances on the test route.
