A trio of Arizona restaurants were named among Yelp’s Top 100 U.S. Restaurants for 2023 — with one of them in the top 10 and all three serving Mexican cuisine.

Leading the way for Arizona was Tucson vegan and vegetarian restaurant Tumerico, which Yelp described as a standout and came in at No. 8 in the nation. The eatery in the Sam Hughes neighborhood near the University of Arizona campus is the creation of Mexico native Wendy Garcia, who has been a chef at other Tucson restaurants. It serves Mexican- and Cuban-style dishes made with many local ingredients, such as mesquite flour, cholla cactus buds, Garcia said.

Rounding out Arizona’s representation on the list, at No. 57 this year, is Cocina Madrigal in Phoenix, which was ranked asThe restaurant is run by the Madrigal family, with husband-and-wife team Leo and Margarita joined by their children, and it plans to open a second location in the city of Maricopa in Pinal County.
