Repairs to Johannesburg's Lilian Ngoyi Street following a gas blast earlier this month shouldn't, in theory, take more than a few weeks - but complications unique to the city may stretch this out further.

Stellenbosch University's Professor Kim Jenkins, who also chairs the SA National Roads Agency's pavement engineering department, says restoring the street is a complex matter - but there is sufficient local expertise to complete it quickly and to a high standard. "There's no reason why bringing the pavement structure back to its former glory shouldn't happen within a month.
