Piers Smulders, from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, said the company was expanding into new territory. "[Chinese consumers] don't need to do bulk shopping anymore because have such reliable options for delivery … it means much less food waste, because you're buying product that's fresh, you're not throwing out old food," he said.Experts say the sustainability push is an attempt to fend off competition from low-cost competitors.
