Record breaking-heat, devastating wildfires, and freakish hurricanes are in the news but experts say stick to fundamentals when selecting climate conscious investments.

Then there were the Canadian forest fires that produced smoke that blanketed the U.S. More recently wildfires consumed parts of Hawaii and a few days ago, the first tropical storm landing in California since 1939 caused destructive mudslides and flooding.

“Separate the fundamentals from the hype,” says Zach Jonson, chief investment officer at Whitefish, Montana’s Stack Financial Management. Jonson believes investors should be looking for companies changing technology and products to address climate change and position themselves for a profitable future. Adding companies that incorporate climate change benefits into their long term strategy can provide a better chance of success for investors.

Environmental, social, and governance investing has become all the rage over the past five years, according to Baun, but continues to receive backlash from the political right. Presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation prohibiting politicians from investing public money in ESG programs and prohibiting ESG bond sales.
