Amapiano's leading ladies: KMAT and Zee Nxumalo on cracking the code in a male-dominated industry

They are behind the most popular amapiano songs, backed up with dance challenges that have since gone viral.

Soshanguve native music DJ and producer Koketso Reabetswe Mathabathe, known as KMAT, behind the hit song MKK, and Eswatini-born and Alexandra township-raised Zee Nxumalo, who also holds it down with Funk 55 and Thula Mabota, are the young women currently setting the dance floor on fire. Spotify Africa recently released stats showing that in 2023 alone, Amapiano had 1.4 billion streams on its site, 55% of which were played in markets outside of Africa.
