The Commission has found that 33 non-compliant suppliers of goods in the Free State have contravened several sections of the Consumer Protection Act.
It found that suppliers repackage items like rice, mealie-meal, baby formula and nuts, into small packages without manufacturing details and expiry dates. The NCC says not only does this affect consumer’s nutrition but it also affects the performance of various industries. NCC’s Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu says “This does not only affect nutrition of consumers; it is something that also affects industries. Because there are legitimate businesses there that are selling food that is not expired but it comes at a slightly higher price. Those that are selling expired goods usually sell those at a very, very low price which turns to attract consumers but it’s also quite harmful to these consumers and a burden broadly to our health system as well.
