The beauty queen who worked as a marketing manager in Cape Town before entering the competition, grew up in Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo.
She received a cochlear implant at the age of two. Her mother Liesel le Roux says she is capable of more than they could have imagined. “We all thought what is going to happen now? How is this child going to cope, how is she going to cope in a community where you have to talk and hear and work? All those obstacles and problems we’ve foreseen, Mia tackled all of them. She showed us as well what you can do if you really want to and if you are resilient. She’s an example for me as her mother.
