A Queensland coal mining company has been charged with industrial manslaughter over the death of a worker three years ago. In a landmark ruling, Mastermyne Crinum Operations was charged on Tuesday over the death of Graham Dawson, 60, who was crushed when a portion of the roof collapsed at the Sojitz Gregory Crinum coal mine, north of Emerald, in September 2021. Another man was injured in the underground collapse that saw rescuers work for four days to retrieve Dawson’s body.
MEU Queensland District President Mitch Hughes said he hoped news of the charges would bring some relief to Dawson’s family and coworkers. “Nothing can make up for the tragic loss of Graham,” Hughes said in a statement. “In a period where we are seeing unacceptable rates of fatalities and serious injuries in the Queensland mining industry, workers and their families have been calling out for justice and for consequences when negligence kills or injures workers.
