Belfast councillors have asked for clarification on the exact boundaries of the city centre, after showing bemusement at a map and current definitions of the outline of the city.
In June members of the council’s City Growth and Regeneration Committee raised queries in relation to the boundary of the city centre and how these are used to delineate project borders. Councillors asked for a rationale around red line boundaries including the city centre boundary. At the September meeting of the C, G&R Committee, DUP Alderman James Lawlor told the chamber: “The map we were provided with in the papers doesn’t really clarify anything for us, and I am sure other members would agree it is not very clear. I would appreciate it if members would be provided with a clearer map. I also think the map is incorrect, so I assume I will have to wait for the review of that.
SDLP Councillor Donal Lyons said that the BMAP boundary was “never a legal document” and added any proposed changes to the boundary would go through the City Hall Planning Committee. A council officer confirmed this. “And I would say the same about the lower half of the Falls. And I am sure Sandy Row has the same concerns.”
