Members affiliated to COSATU embark on a protest against undocumented foreign nationals.

Over 300 members affiliated to COSATU, and the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union have embarked on a protest outside the Home Affairs Department’s Durban Refugee Reception Centre at Umbilo, Durban.

The shops are believed to be owned by foreign nationals. Last week, police arrested several undocumented foreign nationals in a similar operation. “The challenge that we have is against undocumented foreign nationals. The reason being is when you have undocumented foreign nationals, they erode the collective bargaining efforts of the trade unions and bargaining council you’ve heard workers just now say they accept earning as little as R500 which is far below the national minimum wage once the minimum wage is expected to be low,” says Provincial SACTWU Secretary Nadasen Govender.
