Boeing, which has 3,000 nonunion employees in San Antonio, is planning to lay off 10% of its workforce and cutting production in response to the strike.

Boeing Co. is trying to end the strike that’s paralyzed the ailing aerospace company for five weeks with a new contract offer that comes close to the machinists union’s initial demands on wages. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is planning a ratification vote on the proposal Wednesday. The union has not recommended accepting or rejecting the offer but told members it is “worthy of your consideration.

“We look forward to our employees voting on the negotiated proposal,” Boeing said. The union credited acting Labor Secretary Julie Su for helping produce the new proposal. Su met with company and union officials last week in Seattle in an indication of the Biden administration’s concern about the strike’s impact on the economy. The union said some details — including when workers would return to their jobs if they approve the deal — will be part of Wednesday’s vote.
