On the flip side, employers, especially among SMEs have been complaining loud and long about the extra labour cost burdens being imposed upon them by the State — including rises in the national minimum wage, expanded entitlement to sick leave and protective leave , increased PRSI and, from late next year, employer contributions to the new mandatory workplace pension scheme, auto-enrolment.

Even assuming that it is the same respondents that are affected by both shortcomings, the figures suggest that more than one in four Irish workers cannot rely on that baseline as they struggle with their own bills and cost-of-living pressures. And it could be significantly more.
