Business owners in western Victoria are worried the postponement and potential cancellation of the Stawell Gift will force them to close as regional Victoria grapples with an unprecedented economic crisis.
This week the Stawell Athletic Club decided to postpone the annual Easter event because of the COVID-19 pandemic."If the Gift doesn't happen this year it would be something like the third time it hasn't run," he said.Mr Blizzard said the three-day athletics carnival brings in more than $5 million to western Victoria's economy.
"I think it's going to impact the community pretty heavily and that is a disaster for this area," he said. The mayor of the Northern Grampians Shire, Murray Emerson, said the community's health was the main priority. "It's very disappointing, but our thoughts are with our community's wellbeing more than anything else," Mr Emerson said. The Stawell Gift has had an uncertain future during the past 12 months as the Stawell Athletic Club and Victorian GovernmentEarlier this year, the club and the Government resolved a stalemate and agreed on a new funding package.
Rethink the headline. ”drawing a pall over busy Easter business”. Stop being the prop arm for a government unwilling to admit we are in a crisis. Its not an events’ fault that they are doing a sensible precaution. The economy can wait.
Surely they run to fast to catch the Coronavirus🏃♂️🏃♀️
