They’re questioning how the prime minister’s avowedly feminist government could have passed over Carolyn Wilkins for Bank of Canada governor

When Justin Trudeau unveiled his first cabinet with equal numbers of men and women, he explained the move with three words that are now famous: “Because it’s 2015.”

All were careful to point out they respect Macklem, who takes up the Bank of Canada’s top job on June 3. But several said when it comes to getting the top jobs in finance, an old-boys’ network still exists. An official in the prime minister’s office, speaking Wednesday on condition of anonymity, said the government had several conversations and took time to make the right decision, describing the candidates as excellent. The official said there was no division within the government about Macklem as the consensus choice.

Outside RolesMacklem does have one other thing Wilkins doesn’t: senior management experience outside the bank. Given the government hasn’t chosen an insider as governor since 1994 — including Macklem, who was passed over in 2013 for Poloz — that may have mattered.

77BlueJays 'The feminist' lying about something Maybe his attitude towards janephilpott and Puglaas were not clear enough

Joe86538718 Despite what the MSM thinks I would like to believe key assignments like this are made on skill set/competence not gender in order to fulfill a quota.

Trudeau has some interesting judgement calls. Wilkins= No Yet out of their collective depth pinheads such as Joly, Hajdu and the unforgettable McKenna = Yes Please remember these choices as normal as opposed to 'one of' decisions by an erratic JT at election time. cdnpoli

Thought he was a feminist guess he lied about that too. cdnpoli

Did she want the job? If she didn't want the job, there's no problem

Ms Wilkins is certainly more than qualified and being second chair through this pandemic extremely well-versed on current events. Mr. Trudeau and others in the Liberal Party who would be unable to carry on an in-depth conversation with Ms Wilkins *simply* look at optics.

ah now I see she was appointed when PM Harper was in office

🤮

I guess the Bank couldn’t fine a blind transgender recent immigrant in a wheelchair with financial depth to satisfy the Media and interest groups. Maybe next time.

Baloney. I want the most qualified person. Not a woman because she’s a woman. cdnpoli jthorpe11

I’m all for equal opportunity corruption, give her a shot.

Then unfortunately I guess they weren’t the most qualified.

Women in finance? Holy shit can we stop this rhetoric lmao. We have real life issues to deal with right now, we can put the fake issues on the backburner for now

We are used to being disappointed by teacher boy.

I’m a woman. I disapprove of this message.

Maybe Tiff was a better choice you oversensitive snowflakes.

Missed opportunity. Hopefully all the JT lovers just got a big dose of sad reality and remember in the fall.

By keeping her out of his vicinity, I would argue he's doing women a favour.

Because it’s 2020.
