“Sami’s Law will protect riders by requiring instant verification that the driver is legitimate before the ride commences, end fake Uber and Lyft signage by predators in cars, and will promote more effective background checks of drivers,” Smith said.
Samantha Josephson was a senior at the University of South Carolina when she entered a car she thought was the ride share she had ordered. Instead, she was kidnapped and killed. The driver, Nathaniel Rowland,Uber’s head of safety communications, Andrew Hasbun, said in a statement that all trips are tracked through GPS, all drivers must undergo a background check and riders receive the make, model, license plate and name of the driver in advance.
