But as 2023 churns on, the right-to-repair debate has expanded to include nearly all products, from the state of McDonald's ice cream machines to the modification of video games, the servicing of cars and how much owning something actually means in an age where even cars can be turned off remotely. “If you re going to buy something and put it on your books and depreciate it over five years but it only lasts two years because the manufacturer won’t sell you a part, that's on you,” Gordon-Byrne said. “The idea that you bought it, you own it and people are taking away your right to use it — there is no precedent for it.”
