Japan's competition regulator has approved Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The JFTC says the deal 'would not substantially restrain competition', and that it will not attempt to block it.

The Japan Fair Trade Commission has published a statement in which it says it has “reviewed the transaction and reached the conclusion that [it] is unlikely to result in substantially restraining competition in any particular fields of trade”.

It added that it “has notified the parties that the JFTC will not issue a cease and desist order, resulting in the completion of its review”. In a document explaining its decision, the JFTC said the deal didn’t violate any of its anti-competition legislature, saying “the integration falls under the safe harbor criteria for vertical business combinations”.It also concluded that the deal wouldn’t result in supply constraints on other platforms, noting: “There are competing businesses, and games are distributed in digital format, so it is unlikely that there will be a shortage of supply capacity.

“Therefore,” it concluded, “the acquisition would not substantially restrain competition in any particular fields of trade.” The announcement will be welcomed by Microsoft as it continues its campaign to assure regulatory authorities that the deal would not be anti-competitive, somethingFurther good news for Microsoft came last week when the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority said

Sony making it hot for everybody in gaming. They got a bright light on it and also themselves smh. Now does everyone get the Sony on the bike meme smh.

Sony don't have any money. So you does whatever they want already. They act like they own companies without even buying them. Sony don't want to play that game becauae they will lose!!!!!

JFTC: 'Xbox? Never heard of her'

In an unexpected turn of events, Japan defends the North American behemoth, and North America tries to see if the Japanese behemoth is right or wrong. Cool.

Xbox is a joke in Japan and has been for the past 20 years.. They are not even close to being competitors to Nintendo or Sony

Finally it’s over and ps can now announce what games they have been cooking up and announce what acquisition they have planned to make

Now that US congress looking at them...

Ponies are super mad

The timing of this is suspect, that this happens mere days after members of the US Congress calling out the JFTC for turning a blind eye to Sony's market dominance and anticompetitive practices. It looks reactionary to save face.

Nice.

Japan to Sony once the US came snoopin

Does microsoft even offer playstation the 10 year deal at this point? It’ll probably go through regardless and PS has been trashing them since

All good... Competition is good. Love the service no matter the gaming company keep providing games.

Of course they allow it cause xbox is insignificant in Japan, lol

As soon as attention was turned to them they stamped off. Coincidence?

Anyone who supports this acquisition, supports sexual harassment.

Obviously by a marketshare of 2% in the high end console segment.

Finally it’s almost over

Considering how much Xbox means in Japan it's not a shocker.

Not a surprise.

Not a huge surprise. Japan had no reason to object really.

Everyday, this acquisition seems like it’s getting closer to close, Sony doesn’t even a have argument anymore 💀💀

Well duh because Sony has 98% of the high end console market, of course there's no concern of a monopoly for Xbox in Japan 🤣 They should however, look into Sony instead 🥸

Sony PlayStation Ubisoft CapcomUSA_ SquareEnix there are a few to choose from at the moment...👀 hermenhulst

Yeah no shit Xbox gots like 2% of that market but this is just another w in the long line of Xbox Was one step closer to dead Activision Blizzard franchises coming back to life

It’s becoming ugly now
