Making a 5.8-mile stretch of Sheridan Road more accessible to motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and those using public transportation through Waukegan and North Chicago is a goal of a feasibility study set to begin this year as a joint effort of both cities. “This will put us on the path to be more competitive to apply for a grant to start engineering work on the project,” Jesus Alquicira, Waukegan’s city engineer, said Tuesday.
Improving accessibility on Sheridan Road will benefit commerce for both towns. “We want to make it easier for pedestrians to walk to the train stations,” Rockingham said. “We want to make it easier for cars between the traffic lights, so the traffic moves more freely. It will reduce backups.” With traffic currently bypassing all of downtown Waukegan on the Amstutz Expressway, Alquicira said motivating people to go through the central business district, rather than around it, is one of the goals.
