Hundreds of years ago, Blackrock was known, among other names, as Newtown at the Black Rock, Newtown on the Strand by the Black Rock, or simply Newtown, as recorded in the
late 1400s. Blackrock as we know it today is a modern abbreviation of one of its ancient titles, and was so named for the limestone rock on there, which appears black when wet.
