at 31.8 per cent. This is disappointing, but it is not surprising when the female participation in the industry is so low; the construction industry has only a 13 per cent female participation, according to Jobs and Skills Australia.
The gender pay gap does not report on like-for-like salaries. In some companies, the gap could be quickly fixed, for example, by appointing a few highly paid women to senior roles.Instead, leaders need to own their gender pay gap, understand the challenges and act to fix it for the long term. But the construction industry is still a six- and often seven-day-a-week industry where you have to be on site the entire time. Flexibility is rare, with some people still thinking flexibility is being able to attend a dentist or doctor’s appointment and nothing more.Over the past seven years I have been leading the construction industry to change to a five-day work week. The long and inconsistent hours of the industry perpetuate the stereotype that dad is the breadwinner and mum is the carer.
Over the past three years, the NSW and Victorian governments have been working on a culture standard for the construction industry and a key pillar of the standard is that projects work five-day weeks, less than 50 hours a week.
