MARY Ann Pastrana, chairman of the Archipelago Philippines Ferries Corp. (APFC), the shipping company that owns and operates Fastcat, was among the prominent leaders, innovators and thinkers who guested in this year's Tedx Forbes Park last Tuesday, Dec. 10.Pastrana, one of the Philippine maritime industry's icons of empowerment and advocacy, emphasized everything that is good about the industry, its global impact, and how seafarers move the world.

In her topic 'Bridging Islands, Empowering Economies: The Impact of the Maritime Industry,' Pastrana described the significance of ships in connecting islands and countries, spurring trade and economy, and bringing hope to communities in times when borders were closed.She also emphasized how a quarter of the world's seafarers are dominated by Filipinos.'In the Philippines, the sea is not just a backdrop but a lifeblood,' she said.Pastrana stressed that even with its global significance, however, shipping remains unrecognized and unseen by the mainstream.'While it is global in scope, it does not get much attention. It's like what they say, 'out of sight, out of mind,'' Pastrana said, adding that its importance in world trade reflects even the simplest human transactions — shopping.'Without shipping, there is no shopping!' Pastrana exclaimed in her talk.A report by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) shows that some 11 billion tons of goods are transported by ship each year. This represents an impressive 1.5 tons per person based on the current global population.'All the things we shop for online, the necessities we buy in grocery stores, the small luxuries we purchase in malls — all of these are transported through ships,' Pastrana explained.She said that to protect and sustain the industry, leaders should future-proof the next generation of maritime professionals by guiding their career paths, improving port infrastructures, creating better ship designs, taking in more women seafarers, and promoting green shippin
