A former employee of Orange Elephant Roofing & Solar contacted CBS News Chicago with a complaint, sparking an investigation into a massive multi-state operation that has left homeowners out of tens of thousands of dollars each. Customers reported that contractors from the company seemed to vanish without a trace. Kirby Reese received $25,725.34 in insurance money to repair her roof after storm damage in the spring.
She hired Orange Elephant, a company with a website advertising services in six cities, including Chicago. However, Reese claims no work was ever completed. Former managers Stephen Cox and Mike Schmalz shed light on the company's downfall, attributing it to rapid expansion and excessive debt. Cox recounted an instance where he was kicked off an airplane due to a bounced credit card from the company. Schmalz, in his resignation email, expressed concerns about his personal reputation in the roofing business, which he felt was tarnished by his association with Orange Elephant
