Current students of the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine share how applicants can stand out and get into the prestigious medical program (by ellehardy)

Soto Albrecht said that, as a mentor for three young Latina women at Perelman, her first piece of advice for the school's secondary personal essay — the specific question asked by Perelman on top of the general application that goes out to multiple schools — was that they needed to have a compelling personal story that can be told in the 1,000-word character limit.

"I was able to talk about an experience that I did not talk about in any of my other applications. My parents were Mennonite missionaries, and we lived in Columbia, South America, when I was young. They were only paid about $12,000 a year, so when they got back to the US we struggled. My uncle worked at a Salvation Army-type of institution, and they actually dropped off extra things that they had from donations to our family because for a couple of months we had no income," she said.

He added that it shows when a student has simply volunteered at a health fair "every other Saturday," which can be an easy way to build your resume. He believes that long-term volunteering shows dedication and commitment to a purpose or an organization a student is genuinely passionate about. "I was working in a charity clinic with a lot of undocumented or under-insured people and learned the hardships that these people face. Learning to support people in those situations emotionally was a theme I was able to carry through my application," he said.Class of 2021 Perelman student Rami Fathy said that it's important to give the admissions board a picture of what you would be like at school as well as in the medical profession.

He used these activities as a springboard to talk about what he really cares about in medicine, particularly communication and combining the "hard" elements of science with a people-centered approach.
