Is there really enough demand to keep all the cannabis stores popping up across Ontario in business?

TORONTO -- If there’s one thing the western stretch of the Danforth, a busy street in Toronto’s east end, suddenly isn’t short of, it’s cannabis stores.

The pace of openings raises a couple of questions. How many legal weed stores can Canadian customers actually keep in business? If there is a shakeout, what will the survivors have in common? As in other retail businesses, observers we talked to said the key to success is developing relationships with loyal customers.

Adam Vassos, a spokesperson for Canvas, said the opening of competing stores didn’t seem to hurt sales. Some brands have worked very hard at standing out, and creating customer loyalty, by creating a specific look and feel in their stores, says Deepak Anand, CEO of Materia Ventures, a cannabis supply and distribution company,

“If you have five retailers in a span of one block, I don’t know how that would continue to carry on with some unique differentiation,” Maurer said.“There are a few ways to make it through. If you’ve got a really great location, somewhat to the exclusion of other stores, you’re going to be okay. If you’ve got some good first mover advantage in your neighbourhood and you really take advantage of it and get customer loyalty, you might be okay.

Did the person who asked this question really think it through?

Typical government got in over their heads

Let 'em, they'll soon fall like dominoes. Meanwhile I want a submarine sandwich shop, Halifax style Donairs, and an under $40 pizza shop along my street Kthx.

Sylvan lake AB has 14k people and our 5th dispensary just opened. We are reaching critical mass I think.

Shiiiiiiit during covid times without a doubt- my weed smoke has gone way up. Long term probably not.

I remember when it was all Mac's Milks and 7,11s. Now it Pharmacy's so yeah you dam straight.

Duh weed dumbs down duh weed.

Dunno. Never touch the stuff. But does't that invisible hand work all this out?

I’m trying my hardest to keep them going.

Probably not. But go ahead take their moneys, and watch them fall like dominoes. Water seeks its own level. Meanwhile I want a Submarine Sandwich Shop & Halifax Style Donairs and maybe a Pizza shop that isn't $40 pizza on my street real soon please kthx.

If there isn't they will go out of business, like any other business that surpasses local demand for their products or services. Why is this a story?

How many liquor stores do we have? 🤔

Well, fordnation screwed up OCS. Bad weed, mould found, improper delivery dates, bad CBD or THC counts... too expensive for the trash it was. Back in my day, we called that stuff Ditch Weed. Most people I know order from out of province, or their dealer.

Yes, there definitely is the demand. Ontario is a BIG province and you have to remember the high concentration of stores in certain areas is because certain regions opted out, such as Vaughan, Mississauga, etc..

I'll just leave this here:

The number of cannabis stores is starting to approach the number of wineries in Ontario. In both cases there is likely to some that will not survive. CBCWindsor CBC quintenews nationalpost

Is there a Canadian equivalent of Willy & Snoop?

If there isn’t then the market will decide.

People said this about craft breweries and I can’t think of any around me that have ever closed

You must be new in Canada lol
