A career in aged care needs a PR makeover to attract the required quadrupling of its workforce as one educator aims to change the public's perception of ageing.

It is an industry crying out for employees to fill growing demand, but Australians must first change the way they think about it, an aged care educator says.

"The fact you can make such a difference to people is what most of us find the most rewarding thing."While the Federal Government has pledged to spend half a billion dollars on measures to overhaul parts of the aged care sector after the royal commission, frontline workers are trying to encourage people to consider a career in aged care.

"It makes me proud and secure because there is such high demand [for aged care workers]," Mr Malevitsis said.Ms Newcombe said many of her students are offered work before finishing their studies. Aged care will eventually be a major issue for a significant number of Australian voters, and the industry will need about a million workers.

Private operators milk any industry for their own gain. Regis is a private aged care provider. Of 17 Regis board members 10 have experience & qualifications in finance, property development & investment, 1 in law, 1 in IT & 5 in health. What do you reckon are Regis’ priorities?

Above adequate pay & resources will attract staff. Enhancing capacity in university specialist courses will turn shortage around within 5 years as it did with paramedics. Removing private control will ensure funding is used as intended, not for consolidated vatican revenue

What rubbish. All those nit smart enough to become teachers, try early childhood babysitting, and if fail that, become age carers

carers need to be paid more money

You need a quota system

Hiding the name from the headline doesn't help.

We need places to play for those workers.

Fund the sector properly, nationalise the sector (no more for profit operators), pay decent wages, provide decent working conditions, treat the workforce with respect and maybe we will see more people wanting to work in the sector.

Yes, well pay them properly for a start.

Regular shifts, adequate training and treble the wages and then you may see people wanting to do it. A plumber gets $100 an hour for cleaning up shit.....why shouldn’t they. VALUE CARERS!

yeah well attracting them is hard because they continually get abuse on the job and end up with mental heath problems relationship breakdown & physical health problems due to the hard labor.

it doesn't need a PR makeover, it needs better wages
